Mencap West Lancs Drop In Centre Management For the last twelve years and before setting up tos-it Linda managed the South Lancashire Learning Disabilities Database for Mencap West Lancs, Chorley and South Ribble areas before lack of funding forced redundancy. In recent times Linda set up InDEP Drop In Centre in Ormskirk town centre which has been very successful, She now runs it for one day a week on behalf of Mencap West Lancs. Since InDep started I feel that people have moved forward considerably. InDep promotes independence, and because it is in the centre of Ormskirk it is easy for people to access the town's facilities independently. InDep is open from 9-4 every Thursday and people are welcome to drop in during that period. InDep has already achieved some of what people have said they want to do, such as having a game of bowls, a cinema trip, a lunch trip, the list goes on....... Since the beginning of June 2007 Mencap West Lancs have worked in partnership with Lancashire College to provide two courses for people with learning disabilities at InDep. The courses take place every Thursday in the Community Rooms at Ormskirk Chapel Gallery in the centre of Ormskirk. The morning course, which runs from 10-12 (2 x 1 hourly sessions) is Basic Literacy and in the afternoon from 1-3 there is Healthy Lifestyles, see pictures below (click on small pictures to enlarge).
At the beginning of July Linda started a new project for Mencap West Lancs to produce a 3 monthly DVD Newsletter. The DVD will communicate visually and will consist of news items, personal stories and current affairs using drama as a means of passing on information. Most of the location filming will be done by people with learning disabilities making use of InDep facilities. Subject matter will also be decided by people with learning disabilities. |
